Written the afternoon of November 27th, 1998...
Many who know me know that I'm dying for my next birthday to arrive. I'll be turning 21 years old in 90 days. Basically this will entitle me to many new freedoms which I don't legally have now. For one thing, I'm not supposed to consume alcoholic beverages. Another problem I have is that I'm not allowed in many of the clubs/bars/grills after specific times or not at all because of my age.
Some believe that I want to be 21 only so that I can go out and get totally plastered every weekend. That's really not the case. I don't see my drinking patterns (once every month or two I get a wee bit plastered) changing for the better or worse. It really bites when a musical act I want to see comes to town and chooses a 21+ venue. It basically means I'm not going no matter how much I'd like to. There are times when my age really gets on my nerves... For example, one night my boyfriend and I had the munchies and decided to go to one of my favorite local restaurants. It's also a pub and music venue with a lot of really cool deco. Blueberry Hill is beyond cool in so many aspects. It's everything Hard Rock Cafe wishes to be. However, Blueberry Hill has one really bad rule which I did not know about until this incident. After 8pm, nobody under 21 is allowed in. We came around 9pm thinking nothing of it. It was a school night... like I really was planning on getting drunk when I have an economics class at 9am the next morning! It's a real downer. Nothing monumental is going to change about me when I turn 21. I'll be the same person with the same views. I'll have rights, though. I'll be able to walk into an establishment that serves alcohol, or maybe even get a job there. I'm also developing a real dart fetish. I play darts a lot at bowling alleys and sports bars and grills. I can't join a dart league until I'm 21 either... simply because many of the tournaments are held in bars as well. Many of my friends are much older than 21. The average range seems to be from 35 to 18 years of age. But really... I have friends who are much older and much younger. The ones I do things with tend to be 21+, though. So basically when we all go out and do something, they have to curtail their plans and freedoms to meet mine. Contrary to popular belief, I'm not all about drinking or partying at the clubs until 3am. I'm just tired of my limited socializing options and I can't wait for that to change. |
